Marking the International Day of Non-Violence
Every community has defining moments that shape how we respond to challenges. For Meraki Action Initiative, one such moment arose when a group of young men developed harmful habits, targeting girls who were out of school. What started as seemingly small behavior escalated into a serious concern—one that demanded action.
When a vigilant community member raised the alarm, the school invited parents into a dialogue. Yet, while some attended, others struggled to confront such a difficult conversation. Tragically, a few girls dropped out of school, a painful reminder of how silence and avoidance can carry lasting consequences.
This incident became a turning point. While much energy is often placed on protecting girls, Meraki recognized that meaningful engagement with boys is equally vital. Without it, cycles of harm would continue unbroken. This realization led to the birth of their Boys’ Mentorship Program.

Through mentorship, boys were given safe spaces for honest dialogue, guidance, and support. Many made courageous choices to rewrite their futures—re-enrolling in school, stepping into responsibility, and embracing growth. One of them, “Dave” (not his real name), is a shining example. This November, he will sit for his Primary Leaving Examinations. Today, he is not only a dedicated student but also a community leader and outspoken advocate against sexual and gender-based violence.
From the beginning, Meraki’s approach was clear: foster understanding and healing, not resentment. The goal was never to pit boys against girls, but to create environments where both could thrive—free from fear, violence, and harm.
As we mark the International Day of Non-Violence, Dave’s story is a reminder that non-violence is not just the absence of conflict. It is the presence of respect, empathy, equality, and opportunities for young people to choose a different path.

🌍 At The Kind Power, we are proud to highlight the incredible efforts of Meraki Action Initiative in building safe spaces and nurturing the potential of every child.
Their work inspires us all to keep pushing for a world where boys and girls alike can thrive.
